Take Yield to the Next Level with Biologicals and Foliar Micronutrients

Achieving quality performance requires an integrated agronomic system that aligns hybrid genetics, crop nutrition and targeted crop inputs. By treating biologicals, plant growth regulators (PGRs) and foliar micronutrients as core components of a planned system, you can help address key environmenta stresses and unlock your crop's yield potential.
Genetics as the Foundation
Every corn hybrid sets and determines its yield differently based on its unique genetic makeup. Understanding these physiological mechanisms lets you put input dollars where they will have meaningful agronomic impact.Four key components drive corn yield:
- Plants per acre.
- Number of rows around the ear.
- Ear length (kernels per row).
- Kernel depth and density.
WinField® United uses proprietary response-to data to determine how individual hybrids build yield.
- Early-Yield Hybrids (High Response to Population): These hybrids rely on plant population, even emergence and early ear length/rows around the ear. For these hybrids, management focuses on getting the seed out of the ground quickly, driving rapid root development and expanding leaf surface area early. They are ideal candidates for early-season PGR applications and specialized seed treatments.
- Late-Yield Hybrids (High Response to Nitrogen/High Response to Fungicide): These hybrids gain extra yield later in the season through kernel depth, density and test weight. Managing these hybrids requires maintaining late-season plant health, stay-green and supplying adequate nitrogen and micronutrients through grain fill. These products are good candidates for foliar micronutrients and biostimulants that help support kernel production.
Start Strong with PGRs and Seed Treatments
Early planting trends across the Corn Belt expose seed to cool, wet soil conditions. Delayed or uneven emergence creates a yield-robbing height hierarchy where late-emerging plants are shaded out by neighboring crops. That’s where PGRs and biological seed treatments can make a big difference.Driving Emergence with Ascend® PGRs
The Ascend PGR lineup delivers three plant growth regulators designed to optimize crop establishment:
- Gibberellic Acid: Triggers and accelerates the germination process for fast and even emergence.
- Auxins: Promote cell elongation, driving deep root growth and large leaf area index for increased early-season photosynthesis.
- Kinetins: Regulate growth processes and cell division to help balance structural development.

For most planters without liquid capabilities, Dash™ PBC planter box seed treatment provides an effective dry delivery option for biologicals. Dash PBC seed treatment contains eight microorganisms paired with an amino acid food source to help improve early nutrient solubilization and accelerate emergence.
Foliar Micronutrients and Bio-Stimulants Combat Mid-Season Stress
A corn crop continually adjusts its potential ear size in response to environmental stress. Applying targeted micronutrients during critical growth windows helps prevent nutrition bottlenecks.
Early Vegetative Timing (V4–V6)
Right before corn enters its rapid "grand growth" phase, a foliar pass ensures nutrients are available as the plant builds biomass. A micornutrient like MAX-IN® Ultra ZMB® Plus supplies high concentrations of zinc, manganese and boron. Zinc supports early cell division and growth, while manganese and boron fuel photosynthetic efficiency.
Not all multi-nutrient foliar products are the same, so always check the label. Many multi-nutrient products advertise full-spectrum coverage but contain fractions of a percent of nutrients. Look for meaningful concentrations (like the 3-4% elemental levels found in MAX-IN micronutrient products) to ensure the application corrects actual field deficiencies.
Tasseling and Grain Fill Timing (VT/R1)
During the 60-day grain fill period following pollination, the objective shifts to moving manufactured sugars from the leaves directly into the ear to fill out kernel depth. This is when a micronutrient like MAX-IN Boron helps add ROI potential in your crop nutrition plan. Boron is essential for helping maintain vascular integrity, enable efficient sugar and nitrogen transport throughout the plant late in the season.
Other products to consider during the reproductive window include:
- Yield-On®: A plant biostimulant add-on with fungicide applications, it helps improve sugar translocation efficiency to support heavy, dense kernels.
- TRUROW™ AMAZE: A high-kinetin PGR solution that helps extend leaf health and stay-green capability, preserving the plant's photosynthetic factory through harvest.
Next Steps for Your Operation
Now is the time to start building a plan for next season. Start with these key steps:-
Review Hybrid Response Scores: Consult with your local WinField United retailer to evaluate the response-to scores of your chosen hybrids. Identify whether your chosen corn product builds yield early or late in the season.
- Build Your Input System: Start with seed and foundational fertility decisions, then add the right inputs to safeguard yield potential from emergence to harvest.
- Measure Before You Manage: Target tissue sampling around the V5 growth stage to identify hidden nutrient deficiencies before rapid growth begins.
