Peterson Farm Brothers Test a Full-Season Soybean Strategy

One area they are specifically interested in optimizing is their soybean production. So, they worked with WinField® United and their local retailer, Agri Trails Co-op, for an on-farm evaluation using a suite of products they felt best fit their soil conditions and agronomic needs. As part of the evaluation, the Petersons also agreed to document the results in a four-part video series. In it, they share an inside look at the products they’re using and the management decisions they’re making to optimize yield and ROI potential throughout the growing season.
“We’re hoping with these videos we can show how the day-to-day decisions can affect the crop months down the road and how making the right choices can help our crop reach its full potential,” said Greg Peterson.
Three videos are already live, and links to each are below, along with a brief description. The remaining video will be filmed at harvest.
Building a Strong Start
The Peterson Farm Brothers are heading to the field to plant CROPLAN® soybeans and sharing how their early-season decisions are designed to protect yield potential and optimize ROI.
Working with Agri Trails Co-op, they explained how they selected a season-long system that includes Ascend® ST3TM seed treatment to support germination, root development and uniform emergence; MAX IN® Ultra ZMB® Plus micronutrient to supply zinc, manganese and boron during the growing season; and MasterLock® adjuvant to improve spray coverage, canopy penetration and on-target deposition with each application. By pairing these products with a clean seedbed, favorable soil conditions and careful attention to planting depth and population, the Petersons aimed to establish a strong stand and give the crop a solid foundation for the season ahead.
Tracking Early-Season Progress
The Peterson Farm Brothers are returning to the field to scout stand establishment and early soybean growth after the crop endured heavy rain, wet conditions and high winds. Despite some soil crusting, they observed consistent spacing, strong vigor and healthy root development in the soybeans they planted that were treated with Ascend ST3 seed treatment, especially compared with a nearby field planted without a seed treatment.
As the crop progresses, they’ll share how they plan to apply MAX-IN Ultra ZMB Plus micronutrient along with their post-herbicide application to help their soybeans reach their full potential by addressing micronutrient deficiencies.
Evaluating Performance During Pod Set
As their soybeans move through flowering and early pod set, the third video sees the Peterson Farm Brothers heading back to the field to check crop progress. After a season of weather extremes, they evaluated canopy closure, plant vigor and early pod development while comparing the treated crop with nearby untreated soybeans.
They also explain how MAX-IN Ultra ZMB Plus micronutrient supplies zinc to support growth and auxin production, manganese to support photosynthesis and plant health, and boron to aid cell development, flowering and pod set. StrikeLock® adjuvant was included with the application to improve plant coverage and help increase micronutrient uptake. As the season progresses, they’ll monitor insects, disease and weather-related stress to help carry this crop’s yield potential through harvest.
Next Up: Harvest Results
By pairing field observations with agronomic expertise from their local retailer, the Petersons adjust management decisions based on crop development, weather conditions and emerging threats, helping their crop reach its full yield potential prior to harvest. A season-long approach also helps them evaluate how CROPLAN Seed genetics, Ascend ST3 plant growth regulator seed treatment, MAX-IN Ultra ZMB Plus micronutrient, MasterLock adjuvant and StrikeLock adjuvant work together as a complete system.“Working with WinField United this season has been eye-opening so far,” said Greg Peterson. “Taking a system approach and being able to use an entire suite of products to improve our soybean crop from start to finish is showing us how the entire package works together and what a crop can do when all of the right tools are at our disposal.”
