How CROPLAN Corn Products Performed In 2023

Harvest is one of the best times of year, especially because we get to learn how our CROPLAN® products performed in the field. As harvest data rolled in across the country this fall, it became clear that bringing high-end genetics with the latest traits and an objective focus on product development can deliver big yields.

Here’s a look at how CROPLAN corn hybrids have performed this season.

Hybrid Standouts By Yield

You can’t plant a hybrid without confidence in its yield and ROI potential. These products caught the eye of our seed team on a national level with their heavy-hitting performance.

2023 Performance Snapshot

Product RM Yield (bu/A) Potential Return/A* Moisture
CP2180 VT2P/RIB 81 210.1 $955.08 18.6%
CP2790 VT2P/RIB 87 242.4 $1,089.88 19.6%
CP2965 VT2P/RIB 89 245.4 $1,094.48 20.4%
CP3490 VT2P/RIB 94 243.0 $1,077.96 20.8%
CP3724 VT2P/RIB 97 246.2 $1,107.72 19.6%
CP3852 TRE/RIB 98 249.3 $1,145.64 17.7%
CP4757 VT2P/RIB 107 261.4 $1,203.35 18.3%
CP5208 VTP2/RIB 112 270.3 $1,239.92 20%
CP5497 VT2P/RIB 114 276.3 $1258.69 20.4%
CP5760 TRE/RIB 117 280.2 $1256.66 21.8%
CP5893 TRE/RIB 118 257.7 $1205.24 18.6%

CP5893 TRE/RIB is a new 120-day product this year that impressed across many geographies where full-season hybrids are planted, clocking in at an average yield of 257.7 bu/A and an average return of $1,205.24/A.* It exhibited strong plant health and top-end yield. Plus, the Trecepta® trait provided excellent earworm control and the hybrid has great Southern rust tolerance.

We’re also excited about CP5760 TRE/RIB. This 115-day hybrid showcased phenomenal performance across geographies and was the highest yielding product in its trial. It came in slightly behind CP5497 VT2P/RIB on its return because it had a higher moisture percentage, and we take drying costs into account for return calculations, but both of these hybrids are really strong 115-day options.

Moving into 110-day corn, CP5208 VTP2/RIB continued to shine this year. We tested it for two years before releasing it for the 2023 growing season across all three of those years, it’s been consistently performing just how we expected.

CP4757 VT2P/RIB was the standout this year for the 105-day set. This hybrid was a big yielder last year as well, which is why its geographic footprint expanded this season, and we’re seeing strong performance across more geographies.

One of the strongest yielders for 100-day corn has been CP3852 TRE/RIB this season. As far as 95-day corn, our new CP3724 VT2P/RIB has performed outstandingly, especially on good ground. It has great top-end yield potential and has gotten many anecdotal accolades from the field. Growers have been really happy with this one.

Drought challenged many geographies this season, but CP3490 VT2P/RIB was up for the challenge. It handled dry conditions impressively and performed outstandingly in some of our drought-stressed locations. CP2965 VT2P/RIB had another strong year, proving once again to be one of the top-yielding late 80-RM hybrids in our Answer Plot® testing. It’s followed closely by CP2790 VT2P/RIB, which was also a national performer.

Finally, CP2180 VT2P/RIB led the 80-day pack by yield, averaging 210.1 bu/A.

Of course, these are only highlights. Our product performance data runs much deeper. Explore more results on our yield data page.

Hybrid Standouts By Environment

Yield is undoubtedly important, but it isn’t the only measure that matters when it comes to evaluating corn performance. Matching hybrids to your fields’ specific stresses is paramount. Fortunately, many of our products are uniquely positioned to combat certain stresses.

CP3899VT2P/RIB, for example, handled stress well this year, performing strong for farmers managing tough conditions. CP3715 SSPRO/RIB handled stress and lower yield environments well this season too. Plus, with the new SmartStax® PRO trait, it stood strong against corn rootworm.

When it comes to corn rootworm, however, traits can’t be the only answer. Even though we have this new tool in SmartStax PRO, we have to protect it by implementing other management practices to reduce reliance and prolong its efficacy. If you’re planting corn-on-corn, consider using an in-furrow insecticide and/or spraying for beetles around pollination to help prevent infestations the following year.

Tips For 2024 Hybrid Selection

It’s easy to look at yield data and simply pick the top performer, but it’s important to run your product selection process through a few other rounds of vetting. Your local CROPLAN retailer is uniquely trained to help you select, place and manage corn products on the right fields. They can help you assess the stresses you have on your farm, taking into account your farm’s goals, and find the right fit for every situation.

Whether evaluating CROPLAN products or those from another seed company, evaluating and understanding data is crucial. There’s a big difference between a single plot and a replicated trial spanning multiple locations with results that are analyzed and processed to ensure consistency.

Our research process is uniquely in depth. We have our own research groups that use statistical approaches to measure variability and help ensure we have quality, usable and predictable data to guide our recommendations.

As you evaluate your own harvest results and those of prospective 2024 products, be sure to talk with your CROPLAN retailer to set a strong strategy for the season ahead.
