4 Steps to Optimizing Glyphosate Efficacy on Roundup Ready® CROPLAN® Canola

When applying glyphosate products on Roundup Ready® CROPLAN® canola or TruFlex canola with Roundup Ready® Technology, there are four key steps to take to optimize efficacy.

1. Apply the right rate. It’s best to consult your locally owned and operated WinField® United retailer for complete and customized advice to determine the best rate, tank mix and application pointers for your acres.

2. Include the right adjuvant package in your tank mix. An ammonium sulfate water conditioning agent like Class Act® NG® adjuvant helps drive more active ingredient into the plant. It contains CornSorb technology, which helps improve herbicide uptake and performance potential. Make sure to always add Class Act NG or the ammonium sulfate source before adding any insecticides to the tank and allow time for any dry product to dissolve and mix thoroughly. Another great tank mix partner is InterLock® adjuvant, which improves canopy penetration and spray deposition and reduces off target movement. This will help more of your spray reach the intended target and improve efficacy.

3. Use the right water volume. Since glyphosate isn’t active in the soil, it’s important that you use enough water. It’s always a good idea to consult your local agronomist, but I recommend a minimum carrier solution of 10 gallons of water per acre to maximize coverage.

4. Pick the appropriate spray nozzle. Carefully selecting the proper nozzle will help to avoid generating spray droplets that are too small or too large. Since glyphosate is a systemic herbicide, droplet size should be in the 400 to 600 micron range. Pair spray nozzles with ground application equipment for best results.

If you have grassy weed pressure in your canola stand, Section® Three herbicide can also be an effective part of your weed control program. It doesn’t control broadleaf weeds, making it ideal for conventional canola. But it can also be a good fit on Roundup Ready® CROPLAN canola, especially if you suspect that you have glyphosate tolerant or resistant grassy weeds in your fields.

Section Three is a contact herbicide, so thorough coverage of the leaf surface is essential. Proper water volume and nozzle selection are once again very important, as is incorporating the right adjuvant package. If you’re interested in rate flexibility, an oil-type adjuvant like Superb® HC or Destiny® HC can be tank mixed with InterLock adjuvant. If convenience is a top priority, StrikeLock® adjuvant is a high surfactant oil and InterLock adjuvant premix.

As mentioned earlier, reach out to your locally owned and operated WinField® United retailer for assistance in selecting the right rates, adjuvant packages and spray nozzles so you can get the most out of your canola weed control applications.
