  • Each year, replicated corn silage trials are planted at nearly 200 Answer Plot® locations throughout the United States. After harvest, data is compiled and summarized over multiple years and locations, to provide a snapshot of hybrid performance.
  • Summary data of quality and tonnage per acre are compiled and computed using the University of Wisconsin MILK2006 milk-per ton value. This data is then plotted on a scatter graph to show the relationship between quality and tonnage potential for each hybrid.
  • WinField representatives use the scatter graph concept to help you fine-tune your hybrid selection. For most operations, selection is based on hybrids that fall into the high-quality, high-tonnage quadrant to ensure optimal production. CROPLAN® corn silage hybrids that consistently perform in this high-quality and high-tonnage quadrant are marked with the Data Proven logo on pages 65 through 69.


The Right Combination For High Tonnage And High Quality

CROPLAN® seed offers the SilageFirst™ line of corn products, specifically designed for the complex agronomic and nutritional requirements of high-producing dairy and beef cattle. These products offer a balance of effective and digestible fiber and more rumen available starch, thus providing high energy combined with high tonnage potential.

Leafy and floury-leafy hybrids. Genetic benefits:

  • Corn silage sample in farmers handThe stalk has been redesigned to have more leaves above the ear to increase digestibility.
  • Whole plant dry down is slower due to the slow-drying ear.
  • Kernels remain soft when the whole plant moisture reaches optimum moisture of 65 percent.
  • Harvest window is extended compared to dual-purpose hybrids.
  • Can be fed after fermentation occurs. Requires less time in the silo before reaching optimum levels of starch and fiber digestibility.
  • Great to use in combination with dual-purpose hybrids.
  • While leafy and floury-leafy hybrids may not contain the same high level of total starch as dual-purpose hybrids, the softer kernel texture is easily broken during the chopping, storage and chewing process, allowing starch to be readily digested for more available energy.
  • At feed out, floury-leafy products are effective at bridging the gap between the previous year’s corn silage pile and the current year’s feed.
  • Leafy plants are larger and need more room to produce the crop.
  • Leafy production is maximized when planted at 28,000 to 32,000 plants per acre.
  • Leafy stalks are thicker and more digestible, with larger ears to produce more energy,

Dual-purpose hybrids. When used in combination with leafy and floury leafy hybrids, dual-purpose hybrids:

  • Have more flexibility in harvest and feed out as grain or high energy/ high tonnage silage.
  • Work well when harvested first, and leafy or floury-leafy products are harvested last.
  • Are appropriate for feeding after the 120+ day post ensiling when they reach optimum starch and fiber digestibility
