Leverage Technology to Help Select Corn Seed

Leverage Technology to Help Select Corn Seed

You weigh many factors before deciding what seed to purchase, including soil type, management practices and past performance. And, because we are human, all seed selection decisions contain some degree of “this is what my gut is telling me to pick.” But as technology evolves, it becomes increasingly important to use quality data to enable solid seed decisions. This type of information can be found through the R7® Tool, which includes two unique features: the Corn Characterization Charts (CHT Tool) and Top 10 function.

Get unbiased product comparisons
The CHT Tool allows you to compare CROPLAN® seed products as well as seed products from other major companies to see how they are projected to perform on fields just like yours. In many cases, you can purchase multiple seed brands with top-performing genetics, but sorting through the top genetic suppliers and the top-performing hybrids in the CHT Tool helps you choose the ones that best align with the conditions on your farm and your yield goals.

Categories for comparison within the CHT Tool include soil type, crop rotation activity, response to population and management practices. This categorization allows you to control — as well as capitalize on — variability between fields.

Support in-season management decisions
The CHT Tool also features response-to-fungicide and response-to-nitrogen scores, so you know when to put your foot on the brake and when to put your foot on the gas. That is, many farmers have planted corn seed with excellent genetics, but they need to know which hybrids will respond better than others to a late-season fungicide application and which hybrids will respond well to an in-season nitrogen application. As corn prices fluctuate, the CHT Tool lets you know when such applications make good economic sense.

Create your Top 10 list
The Top 10 function lists the 10 best-performing corn hybrids based on soil type in a selected location, allowing you to identify the best genetic choices for your specific fields. For example, information on corn hybrids listed in the tool includes yield potential and response to soil type, as well as ear, stalk and root photos of that hybrid in different planting and fertility environments.

Increase production potential
Timely, data-supported in-season management is the future of corn production. We’re not going to achieve 500-bushel corn by doing the same thing year after year. The race to achieve high corn production will change many in-season management practices. Optimizing inputs per bushel can lead to your best ROI potential. Higher-trending yields are often where we find the most sustainable bushels.

Talk with your agronomist about how you can access the CHT Tool and Top 10 function to help optimize the genetics you’ve paid for. You deserve to get the most from that investment.
